95 million counterfeits intercepted in Europe in 2001 - Commission will present proposals for strengthening intellectual property protection and co-ordinating sanctions

Brussels, 26/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - European customs seized 95 million in 2001, according to statistics just published by the European Commission. Their value on the legal Community market is put at over €2 billion and have increased 900 % since 1998, which can be explained partly by the greater diversity of articles now being counterfeited and partly by improved customs controls, pointed out an expert from the Commission.
