Brussels, 24/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has decided to take Greece to the Court of Justice because of a special tax on pleasure craft entering Greek territorial waters, which it considers as a tax with equivalent effect to import duties contrary to the treaty. The Greek Law of 1999 introduced this tax on private pleasure craft more than 7m in length entering Greek territorial waters and which have no permanent mooring in a Greek port. No service is actually rendered to the person paying the tax and comes on top of any harbour dues normally levied. It is paid into the special account of the Harbour Police Fund. The tax is contrary to the Articles of the EC Treaty, which prohibit a tax with equivalent effect to import duties between Member States.
