Brok welcomes current developments and announces Iranian Foreign Minister has agreed in principle to speak before the EP

Brussels, 24/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Chairman of the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs, Elmar Brok (CDU), affirmed while reporting to his committee on the recent visit by a Parliament delegation to Iran that "seen from the inside, Iran does not correspond to the image that we have of it on the outside. It is a living country, a developing country, that deserves our interest and continued dialogue so that the evolution under way will be strengthened and in order to make one understand what does not correspond to our criteria" (at this point he mainly cited the fact that the country's justice system is far from independent and arrests are arbitrary). Mr Brok, who recalled that the Parliament should give its agreement to an eventual future EU/Iran trade agreement, pointed out that the Iranian Foreign Minister and a delegation from the Iranian Parliament agreed in principle to speak before the European Parliament. Furthermore, he specified that the delegation, which met President Khatami and Foreign Minister Kharrazi and also different associations (such as the association of Iranian journalists), visited an Iraqi refugee camp near Chiraz and a charity organisation presided by European member of the British Liberal Democrats, Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne.
