EU strategy for Johannesburg

Brussels, 22/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, in Brussels, the General Affairs Council adopted conclusions on the "EU communication strategy for Johannesburg and initiatives derived from Seville Conclusions". In this text, the Council mainly insists on the link to be established between the Doha Development Agenda, the Monterrey Consensus and the Johannesburg Action Plan. With a view to the next World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Council confirms the European Union's commitment in favour of eradicating poverty, the fight against AIDS and the other transmissible diseases, as well as preservation of biodiversity. It confirms its support for the development of the "Water for Life" Initiative in order to find sustainable solutions to the problems of water management and access by the populations to drinking water. In the implementation of these different initiatives, the Council indicates that the EU will give special attention to Africa in the context of the support afforded to the NEPAD initiative.
