Strasbourg, 02/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption last week in Strasbourg of the report by Dutch Christian Democrat René van der Linden, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe urges for strengthened cooperation between the institutions of the different European organisations. It calls on the European Union to adhere to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR), and invites the Convention to ensure that the EU's Charter on Fundamental Rights aims to complete the ECHR and to strengthen its effectiveness. The Assembly also invites the EU to strengthen its presence at the Council of Europe in the form of European Commission participation at the Committee of Ministers and of European Parliament participation at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
