Brussels, 02/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - At the Agriculture Council on Thursday in Luxembourg, the Council adopted a common position on the draft regulation on statistics for rail transport. This regulation aims to establish complete and harmonised statistics on the development of rail transport and improve safety.
The common position strengthens secrecy on the disclosing on statistical data by Eurostat by only authorising this organisation to give out data if it is already available to the public in Member States and if the companies concerned give their approval. The Council approved certain amendments introduced by Parliament adopted during the first reading but rejected the amendment seeking to increase the type of statistics collated (notably statistics on investments in rail infrastructure) and that detailing the types of passenger trains to be included in statistics.
