14/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - The members of the Green/EFA Group, alex de Roo and Miquel Mayol I Raynal welcomed the European Commission's initiative of calling for further explanations of the Spanish Government over its hydrological plan in a letter dated 23 May. "It's the first positive step by the EU (…) This letter underpins the weakness of the plan", says do Roo, citing in particular the lack of information on the long-term consequences, an over-estimation of demand for water, a risk of a deterioration in the quality of the water and the salification of the Ebre's delta once a part of the river's water has been diverted. Mr. Mayol I Raynal criticises the Spanish Government for not taking account of the large demonstrations against this project.
