14/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - German Social Democrat Martin Schulz, MEP, addressed a written question to the European Commission in order to know what it thinks of the proposal put forward by the Italian government, currently being discussed in Senate, aimed at setting up two companies, "Patrimonio spa" and "Infrastrutture spa", to which a "considerable part of the heritage of the Italian State (buildings, monuments, etc.) would be entrusted". Mr Schulz, who speaks in this connection of a "creative financing" operation that would in fact result in increasing the public deficit of a State that is already among the most heavily indebted EU countries, calls on the Commission to examine the compatibility of the initiative with respect of the Stability and Growth Pact.
