Reduction of environmental impact of detergents in EU

Brussels, 14/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - An intermediary report published by the Commission notes a fall in the use of detergents (4.6%), packing (5.9%) and poorly biodegradable ingredients (14.5%). According to the survey, progress is not uniform throughout the period covered (1996-2000), but results show a favourable trend towards the achievement of the aim to reduce the environmental impact of washing powders and other detergents in the EU by 2002 (10% of consumption of packaging and of IFB, and 5% energy consumption). These objectives are a voluntary "environmental agreement", concluded between the Commission and the AISE (Association internationale de la Savonnerie, de la Détergence et des Produits d'Entretien) which represents nearly 90% of the detergent and cleaning products industries in the EU. According to AISE, this code of good conduct and the consumer information campaign "Washright" should allow these targets to be reached, the final figures being given in the autumn.
