Spanish Presidency tries to get agreement on principles governing direct agriculture aid but some countries still don't agree - Piqué and Verheugen hope agreement will be reached by 17 June

Luxembourg, 10/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - As expected, the General Affairs Council in Luxembourg on Monday did not enable real progress to be made on the sensitive issue of direct aid for farmers in candidate countries once they join the EU. Foreign ministers couldn't even agree on the package of five principles intended to create the framework for a decision on how the aid is to be paid and the decision has been put off until the Brussels European Council in October 2002.
