Brussels, 10/06/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has launched a series of workshops the objective of which is to present EU policies and programmes on democracy and human rights throughout the world. The first workshop, which opened in Amman (Jordan) on 10 June, was devoted on the regional role of Arab civil society in fostering democratisation and human rights. The next workshops will be held in North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Southeast Asia. This initiative held at regional level is concentrated on four thematic priorities: - support to strengthen democratisation, god governance and the rule of law; - abolition of the death penalty; - support for the fight against torture and impunity, international tribunals and criminal court; - combating racism, xenophobia and discrimination against minorities.
