06/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - Dutch Liberal leader Hans Dijkstal (of the VDD) said in an interview published in the Telegraaf newspaper on Saturday and also reported by AFP in The Hague that the Dutch government elected on 15 May should puts its veto on the next round of enlarging the European Union since such enlargement is "the biggest threat for the financial power of European countries". Mr Dijkstal describes himself as a convinced European, but said things were difficult enough with fifteen Member States so one can imagine what it would be like with ten more countries. The VVD is one of the parties in the current coalition governing the Netherlands. The bill will have to be paid by all EU citizens and therefore also by the Dutch, which is why we shouldn't accept it, he said.
