Events in France bring Europe into limelight, notes Prodi

Brussels, 30/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - In response to questions put to him by the press on Tuesday on Jean-Marie Le Pen's breakthrough in French presidential elections, Romano Prodi said he had "thought a great deal, especially after the ballot". After the first round, the National Front leader "mainly attacked" Europe, although he had practically not spoken of Europe during the electoral campaign, he pointed out. Le Pen understood that "new democracy is through Europe" and "we are now at the heart of the European political debate", said Mr Prodi, stressing the "enormous responsibility" that Europe has to help find answers to the concerns expressed by citizens in this vote: security and immigration in particular - problems that go beyond our borders, he recalled.
