Brussels, 30/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday the European Parliament adopted Astrid Lulling's report (Luxembourg Christian Democrat) on the decision on the Community Statistics Programme 2003-07. The EP largely supports the document prepared by the Commission but has added three amendments. The first stresses the necessity of breaking down the figures according to gender in the different fields in order to bring added value to policy. The EP believes that the envelope for the programme (EUR 192.5 million) is insufficient, given that enlargement and other challenges will need meeting if the objective consists in making the EU the most competitive knowledge-based economy in the world, and is therefor asking for this to be increased to EUR 222.377. The third amendment demands comparable data to be set up on international mobility in the education and research sectors.
