THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/indonesia

29/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - During an international workshop organised at the European Parliament on the theme "Indonesia: - Between Regional Autonomy and Military Rule", Matti Wuori, Finnish member of the Greens/EFA Group, insisted on the need for development of the democratic movement in Indonesia to go hand in hand with a cessation to the "spiral of violence" in which Indonesian armed forces are involved. "It is only thereafter that we can open the way towards real political dialogue", he said, adding: "What we need is both international mediation and genuine political will. I would like to stress the truth and reconciliation process of South Africa as a good example of a way to move towards sustainable stability". Work mainly covered the problem of "denial of the Papuans' right to self determination" and the demands made by the Aceh movement.
