Brussels, 26/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Spanish government confirmed Spain's candidature for receiving the new nuclear fusion reactor (ITER). This proposal will involve the site of the former Vandellos reactor in Tarragona (Catalonia). This nuclear centre, which experienced a fire in 1989, is closed but another reactor Vandellos II is working. The Spanish site is competing with a French proposal that wants to host the international project, in which the European Union, Canada, Russia and Japan are participating, in Cadarache (between Aix en Provence and Marseilles in the South of France). The French site is already host to a number of Atomic Energy Commission research installations.
