Brussels, 26/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - The President of the Liberal Group in the European Parliament, Graham Watson and the Belgian member of the Group, Daniel Ducarme have submitted a draft resolution on a short "European Democracy Charter", calling for the backing of each citizen for this document "faced with an indisputable emergence", at recent elections in Europe, of parties and movements whose ideologies and programmes "harbour elements contrary to the principles of democracy". Noting that the number of votes expressed for these parties was "far from ensuring a sufficient representation to reach any position of power without outside help", the Liberal members continue: "We too, signatories of the present paper, pledge before the electorate to (..) ceaselessly strive at strengthening the acquis of our common democracy (…) not to allow our practices, programmes and political discourses to be contaminated by anti-democratic ideologies (…). We undertake not to associate ourselves in a political coalition, with formations or parties who clearly carry ideologies or proposals that could harm the democratic principles on which our political system is based". The signatories call on each citizen to adhere to the principles contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and undertake "not to provide support to candidates who stand for public office and who emerge from movements, formations or parties whose ideologies and programmes are contrary to the principles contained in these texts".
