Jerusalem, 25/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - CFSP High Representative Javier Solana and the EU's Special Envoy for the Middle East, Miguel Angel Moratinos, were able to meet President Arafat in his Ramallah headquarters. The meeting lasted about one hour and a half (first of all with other officials and then just with Yasser Arafat and his adviser, Nabil Abu Rudeina). It mainly focused on the siege of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem and on the humanitarian situation of Palestinians. Mr Solana said on this occasion that he was "very, very shocked by Arafat's situation". Mr Solana and Mr Moratinos then went on to Tel Aviv, where they met Defence and Foreign Affairs Ministers Benjamin Ben Eliezer and Shimon Peres (with whom they also spoke of possible solutions to the problem of the besieged headquarters of the Chairman of the Palestinian Authority, and of armed activity at the Church of the Nativity), before returning to Ramallah where they again met Palestinian officials. The brief mission came to an end on Thursday morning with a meeting with Ariel Sharon in Jerusalem. (Javier Solana then went on to Sweden where he took part in a seminar on the future of Europe and the role of the Council).
