Commission proposes approximation of criminal law in EU countries to combat cyber-crime

Brussels, 23/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - In the wake of the European Council of Lisbon, and more particularly in the context of the e-Europe initiative, the European Commission presented, on Tuesday, a proposal of framework decision on attacks on information systems. The proposal covers the main kinds of crime that have recently appeared in the field of information systems, namely: piracy (unauthorised access to such systems), the implementation of software that modifies or destroys data (virus, for example), and attacks through service denial (disruption of information systems). It aims to approximate the criminal laws of EU countries to ensure that the police and judiciary authorities have the means to act against this new form of crime. EUROPE will come back to this in greater detail.
