23/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - In a speech given last Friday in New York on the theme "the UK and the US: Realising Churchill's Vision of Interdependence", Chancellor for the Exchequer Gordon Brown mainly said that "what we now need is a Cecchini-style report (the 1988 report evaluated the cost of not completing the internal market) that investigates the potential benefits for growth, prosperity and jobs on both sides of the Atlantic from a wide-ranging effort to tackle all the remaining barriers to a fully open trading and commercial relationship between Europe and America". Preliminary studies show that eliminating the tariff and non-tariff barriers could raise employment by 1.3 million in the EU and cut EU prices by at least 2.5%, says Mr Brown.
