Brussels/Beirut, 28/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - CFSP High Representative, Javier Solana, on his return from Beirut, where he attended a meeting with the Arab League, met the Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon and President of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat, on Thursday, indicated a press statement. Mr Solana condemned once again on behalf of the EU, the Netanya terrorist attack and stressed that there was yet again need to display maximum restraint in an effort to bring violence to an end. Mr Solana called on the Palestinian leader, "to do everything in his power to bring violent elements within the Palestinian movement under control, and to bring an immediate cease-fire into effect".
The President of the European Parliament, Pat Cox is expected to meet the High Representative for the EU to Middle East, Miguel Angel Moratinos, next Thursday. Together, they will call on Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat to address the European Parliament and the possibility of sending a high level delegation to Israel and the Palestinian territories (see EUROPE 27 March page 4).
