Research recommends land application for disposing of liquid sludge

Brussels, 28/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - According to new research published by DG Environment, agricultural recycling (spreading or land application) is the best way of disposing of sewage sludge from the point of view of the environment and the economy. The research demonstrates that the cost of spreading solid sewage, estimated at between EUR 10 and 160 a tonne, is much lower than other options, like incineration (EUR 260 to 350 a tonne). The agricultural value of the waste (since less fertiliser is needed) can recoup between 10 and 30% of the cost of spreading. The study points out that the prospect of using sewage sludge in agriculture largely depend on improving the quality and safety of the sludge in terms of its potential health and environmental impact by ensuring that heavy metals and organic compounds are kept out of the sewerage system and sewage is treated more effectively with tighter monitoring of quality standards.
