Brussels, 20/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - On the initiative of Michaele Schreyer, the Commission decided on Wednesday to continue its legal proceedings (in which it is being joined by ten Member States) against a ruling by a US court concerning an EU complaint against cigarette manufacturers Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds, accused of cigarette smuggling (see EUROP E of 21 February, p.12). After considering the ruling by the New York District Court on 19 February, the Commission decided to appeal against the ruling rejecting the EU's accusations of smuggling, and may also bring a new action for money-laundering based on fresh evidence.
