20/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, the Hunting, Fishing and Environment Intergroup of the European Parliament, headed by Italian Michl Ebner, affirms that, during a meeting in Strasbourg last week with MEPs, Environment Commissioner Margot Wallström acknowledged the fact that hunting is a "sustainable and lasting activity" and that the European directive on hunting, after existing for 23 years, is "somewhat out of date". Even if the fundamental principles that inspire it remain valid for protecting wild fauna, the Commission plans soon to present a "clear interpretative guide" for the directive, bringing in elements of flexibility on hunting seasons and modalities, states the press release. It cites the role played in the meeting by FACE (Federation of Field Sports Associations of the EU).
