Strasbourg, 12/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - At the end of its emergency debates last Thursday, the EP adopted a resolution on the presidential elections in Madagascar end-January, observing that, whereas opposition parties claimed that the election were rigged, the High Constitutional Court had ordered the organisation of a second round on 24 February. Noting that the members of this Court, all appointed by the outgoing President, had "rejected the requests aimed at confirming the results obtained by the different candidates", the EP wanted to send an EU Troika to meet "all the protagonists", should a second round take place. In such a case, the EU should send observers on the ground.
