12/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Council's decision not to send Germany a warning about its budget deficit has been resoundly criticised by various MEPs, particularly German opposition CDU MEPs, Klaus von Wogau (a pyrrhic victory for the German government ); Karl-Heinz Florenz (Schrôder and Eichel are jeopardising the future of the euro); Harmut Nassauer (Schröder's attempts at intimidation - he also made sarcastic comments about the image of Germany, formerly a star pupil); Elmar Brok (asking whether Monetary Union should be taken out of the responsibility of the finance ministers before they destroy our common currency by their common connivance); and the CSU MEP Aexander Radwan (catastrophic precedent). The President of the Liberal group, the UK's Graham Watson, joined theme saying the "typical piece of euro-fudge" had been taken by the eurozone ministers and demonstrated "yet again the risk that those countries outside the euro will pay a price in terms of loss of influence over key decisions that will affect them. Despite Gordon Brown's efforts to support Germany… he will be presented with a fait accompli".
