Employment conference in Madrid prepares for Barcelona

Brussels, 12/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - On 11-12 February in Madrid, the Spanish Presidency will be organising an "Employment Conference in Europe: from Luxembourg to Barcelona". The conference will aim to assess revision of the European Employment Strategy and focus on the "Employment Triangle" (as Andrew Fielding, spokesman for Anna Diamantopoulou, has described it) that the Commission will be presenting at the Barcelona Summit. This will include: 1) A report on the "Increased Participation in the Labour Market and the Promotion of an Active Old Age" (see EUROPE 25 January page 7); 2) Commission Communication - "Anticipating and Managing Change: a Dynamic Approach to the Social Aspects of Company Restructuring" (see EUROPE 11 January page 9); 3) "Commission Action Plan on Mobility competencies", which will be presented on 13 February (see above). Speakers include the Spanish Minister of Work, Juan Carlos Aparicio, his counterpart from Greece, Dimitrios Repas, and Italy, Roberto Maroni, the Director General of DG Employment at the European Commission, Odile Quintin and the General Secretaries from the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), Emilio Gabaglio and Spanish affiliate, Juan Jimenez de Aguilar.
