Parliament calls for court to be set up to decide on status of prisoners

Strasbourg, 08/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - During its emergency debates on Thursday, the EP passed a resolution tabled by the EPP-ED, Socialist, Liberal, Greens and GUE groups on the conditions under which prisoners are being detained in Guantanamo Bay, calling for them to be treated in a manner that respected international humanitarian law for prisoners - this applied both to the prisoners in the US base in Cuba and also to those held in US bases in Afghanistan and neighbouring areas. The EP reiterated its solidarity with the US in the war on terror but said that when in doubt about the status of a prisoner, universally recognised international law gives such prisoners the status of "prisoner of war" until such time as the relevant court decides on the case, and therefore called on the Security Council to pass a resolution on the setting up of a court to decide on questions linked to Afghanistan, which would decide on the legal status of the prisoners.
