08/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - The dispute ("misunderstanding" according to Algeria) over the refusal to grant visas to European Commission officials who were due to travel to Alger for a working visit, is reported to have been resolved (see EUROPE of 6 February, p.7). A Commission spokesperson said the Commission was satisfied with the results of the discussions they had held on this matter with the Algerian ambassador in Brussels (which are reported to have taken place over dinner on Thursday). The EU mission will be travelling to Alger in the spring, explained the spokesperson. Reliable sources in Brussels suggest that Algeria wanted to play down this situation, saying that the visas had not actually been refused as such, but simply objected to as a result of the authorization procedure used.
