Commission launches proceeding concerning imports of certain flat-rolled products

Brussels, 28/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - Following a complaint lodged on 12 November by Eurofer (European Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries), the European Commission has opened an anti-dumping proceeding concerning the import of certain flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel, of a width of 600 mm or more, not clad, plated or coated, in coils, not further worked at than hot-rolled, from Egypt, Hungary, Iran, Libya, Slovakia and Turkey. The dumping allegation in respect of Turkey is based on a comparison of normal value established on the basis of domestic prices, with the export prices of the product to the Community. For the other countries, the allegation is based on a comparison of constructed normal value with the export prices of the product concerned to the Community. Eurofer has provided evidence that imports of the product concerned have had substantial adverse effects on the Community industry and the employment situation in the EU (see OJ C364, p.5).

Following another Eurofer complaint, the Commission has decided to launch an interim review of the anti-dumping measures applicable to the same type of products from Bulgaria and South Africa (see OJ C364, p.8). Eurofer alleges that the two countries have continued their dumping practices and the existing measures are no longer sufficient to counteract the injurious effects of dumping. The Commission's investigation will cover the year 2001.
