Reasoned opinions to Belgium for not sharing Cargo

Brussels, 27/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission decided on 21 December to send two reasoned opinions to Belgium for not implementing two rulings of the Court of Justice dated 14 September 1999. Belgium has been condemned for not having opened parts of cargo to other EU national for the quota of cargo due to them by virtue of bilateral maritime agreements made with several African countries (Togo, Mali, Congo, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire). Over two years after this condemnation, Belgium has neither withdrawn nor adapted its arrangements on sharing cargo and has therefore still not complied with the legislation on the free provision of maritime transport services. The Belgian authorities now have two months to take all the measures required by implementing the Court's rulings. If they fail to do so, the Commission could again turn to the Court indicating the amount of the fine or the lump sum over and above the fine to be paid by Belgium.
