Brussels, 14/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - The most recent Eurobarometer on the euro (carried out at the end of November and published by the European Commission on Thursday) still shows gaps in information for citizens in the eurozone. 6% of them are not aware that the changeover to the euro will take place in 2002; 15% are not aware that their euro coins and notes can be used in other countries in the eurozone; and only 36% of them know exactly when the period of double circulation is in their country. Moreover, there is still an urgent need to raise levels of confidence between governments, traders and consumers since 70% of citizens are concerned about abuse and price increases after 1 January 2002. 70% of citizens consider they are well informed, however, which is an improvement. Commissioner Pedro Solbes said that the introduction of euro notes and coins had to be discussed by ministers on a daily basis until everything runs smoothly, and extra attention should be paid to the citizens' need for more information after 1 January 2002 during the transition period.
