Brussels, 13/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - All united for a more social Europe, for more jobs and for quality jobs: that is the message sent to the Laeken Summit by some 80,000 trade union demonstrators and members of civil society and NGOs having come from the fifteen Member States and applicant countries to demonstrate in Brussels on 13 December (see EUROPE of 29 November). "We want to get two clear and strong messages through to Laeken", stressed the General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), Emilio Gabaglio: - "faced with a risk of economic recession and problems of employment (unemployment should rise in 2002, which is unacceptable), we call on the European Central Bank not only to target inflation but also growth and employment, and call on governments for a package of European-wide measures to support economic activity and jobs: - regarding the review of the Treaty, it seems obvious that the EU does not need small reforms, but to regain its ambition of a genuine plan for society, which means full recognition of the rights of employees and citizens". According to him, this means that a real economic government needs setting up in Europe, to safeguard the Community method and have open institutions with citizen participation.
