Brussels, 03/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - A Summit of Afghan Women for Democracy is to be held in Brussels from 4 to 6 December to discuss the reconstruction of the new Afghanistan, and in particular women's participation. Commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou will inaugurate the Summit, which is being organised by the European Women's Lobby (EWL), UNIFEM and some fifty Afghan women, of different ethnic backgrounds, religions and languages.. Among the participants are women from Europe, Pakistan, republics of Central Asia, the United States, and Canada, who want to put across the message that women in Afghanistan want the right to decide on their own future. Anna Diamantopoulou stressed that these Afghan women represented over half of Afghanistan's population, and that it was therefore essential that they be taken into consideration in the work of rebuilding their country.
