Political dialogue with Cuba is rekindled

Brussels / Havana, 03/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - The meeting between representatives of the European Union and the Cuban Foreign Minister, Felipe Perez Roque, this weekend in Havana, seems to have allowed effective rekindling of the political dialogue that was broken off one year ago. "We worked seriously during the meeting and, I believe, we were able to rekindle political dialogue at a very useful level", Jan de Bock, General Secretary for the Belgian Foreign Ministry and Head of the European Delegation, told the press. Mr Perez Roque said for his part that the discussion was "serious, open and respectful". He added that, in his view, it is desirable "for both parties to continue these discussions". In a joint statement, both parties reaffirm their "will to exchange information on human rights questions. The problems and disputes were examined and both parties spoke of the possibility" of signing the existing international conventions on human rights. Furthermore, both parties condemned the "unilateral and extra-territorial measures" with reference to the US embargo on investments in Cuba. The statement also declares that both parties "expressed their firm condemnation of all forms of terrorism". The director for the American continent of the Belgian Foreign Ministry, Willy Stevens, told Reuters that the EU should make a positive examination of the results of this meeting, prepared in detail by the Cuban delegation. The General Affairs Council should, in the light of the results of the meeting, examine the common position on Cuba adopted in 1996 next week.
