Brussels, 27/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - By adopting with 41 votes, against 2 and 1 abstention, the report by the Greek EPP Antonios Trakatellis, the Parliamentary environment and health committee recommends for the European Parliament to re-confirm its vote in first reading over the new action programme in the field of public health (2001-2006). During its June examination, the Council did not take into account the Parliament's amendments and had even reduced from EUR 300 to 280 million the size of the budget for this programme, while the Parliament voted in favour of a EUR 380 million budget. As a result, the report proposes for the plenary, which should examine this dossier during its December session in Strasbourg, to modify the Council's common position by adopting the same amendments as in the first reading (on the Council text, see EUROPE of 6 June, p.8).
