20/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - On 19 November, the General Affairs Council approved without debate conclusions in which it confirms its commitment to the Convention on the ban or limited use of certain traditional weapons that may be considered as producing excessive traumatic effect or striking without discrimination. It welcomed the holding of a second conference of party States responsible for examining the convention, from 11 to 21 December in Geneva. The Council, which is particularly concerned by humanitarian problems engendered by the "debris of explosive warfare", supports the establishment, with this conference, of a group of experts on the question, hoping that it will move on to the negotiating stage as quickly as possible. Finally, it supports the proposal put forward by the United Sates and Denmark aimed at strengthening the regime applicable to landmines other than anti-personnel mines.
