Commission grants immediate initial aid of one million euro to victims of flooding in Algeria

Brussels, 13/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has decided to immediately release initial humanitarian aid of around one million euro in favour of the populations that have been hit by torrential rains in northern Algeria. The aid announced on Tuesday by the spokesperson for Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Poul Nielson will be granted according to emergency procedure allowing ECHO (the Community's Humanitarian Aid Office) to react as quickly as possible to humanitarian disasters. The funds will go to the International Red Cross Federation and to the Red Crescent, to Médecins du Monde and to Médecins sans frontières. Other financing decisions may follow according to the needs currently being assessed.
