11/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) recommends the adoption of more stringent safety measures in tunnels. In a report on "safety in tunnels: dangerous goods transport in road tunnels" presented this week, the OECD proposes to place tunnels in five categories. Category A is for tunnels that meet the strictest security norms while category E is for those which meet the less strict requirements, and which would be banned from dangerous goods transport. On the basis of the analysis of 33 cases of serious fires, mainly in the Mont Blanc Tunnel in March 1999, the OECD recommends the installation of automatic extinguishing systems on heavy vehicles, improved training for drivers in emergency procedures and rest areas where heavy vehicles may cool down on mountainous roads.
