Strasbourg, 25/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has for the first time adopted a series of recommendations on the application of the Charter of Regional or Minority Languages. The recommendations are addressed to: Croatia: The Committee requests that administrative, institutional, legal and legislative measures be taken to promote and guarantee the use of such languages; - Finland: the Committee recommends immediate measures for strengthening the position of the Sami language in teaching and increase its presence in the media. The use of Swedish and Sami should also be encouraged in the judiciary and administrative sectors, in health and social protection; - the Netherlands: The Committee mainly recommends the development of teaching in the Friesian language and its use for judicial and administrative matters as well as in the audivisual media.
