GENERAL NEWS / (eu) ep/attacks in the united states

14/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - At the time when the extraordinary Transport Council was meeting, convened following the attacks in the United States and in view of the extraordinary Justice/Home Affairs Council next Thursday on the same issue (see articles on pages 5 and 7 of this bulletin), the Bavarian CSU member of the EP, Ingo Friedrich called on the transport ministers of the EU to coordinate their decisions with the ministers of home affairs. The two Council formations will indeed have to take decisions on the "internal security", the MEP observed in a press release, placing emphasis on the need for effective controls "in all airports and all stations, everywhere". At the same time, Friedrich warned: our daily lives will change, but "people's mobility" will also have to be maintained. In particular, according to him, they must not give in to the temptation of reducing public demonstrations to a minimum, as it would be giving way to the pressure of terrorists. Simply, we must accept constraints that will stem from the strengthening of security controls, said Mr. Friedrich.
