JHA Council meeting on 20 September

Brussels, 14/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The EU Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs will be meeting on Thursday 20 September, in Brussels, for an extraordinary meeting of the JHA Council devoted to the fight against terrorism after the attacks that hit the United States. The meeting, that should last all morning, will have two points on the agenda: the situation in the United States and its consequences for the EU. Proposals aimed at strengthening cooperation in the fight against terrorism will also be examined. On this occasion, the ministers are expected to have a first exchange of views on the finalisation of a common definition of terrorism and the creation of a "European arrest warrant", two proposals put forward by the European Commission the day after the attacks on New York and Washington. They will be put to the ministers by Commissioner Antonio Vitorino. (See EUROPE of 6 September, p.10, on the subject of the adoption by the European Parliament of the Watson Report, which calls for a definition of terrorism and a European arrest warrant).
