THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) council of europe/european identity

14/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The second round table of the Colloquium of the Council of Europe on "European identity: history and religion" will take place in Strasbourg on 20/21 September. Within the context of a Europe made up of pluralist identities, it aims to examine the causes of the religious, spiritual and cultural antagonisms that are still dividing the continent, and how to end these disputes. Organised on the initiative of Walter Schwimmer, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, along with the four Presidencies of the Council of Ministers in 2001 and 2002 (Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania and Luxembourg), the colloquium will hold its third and final round table in 2002 (the first was held in April 2000). Once all three have taken place, a Declaration on European Identity will be published.
