GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/colombia

13/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - Some twenty MEPs have written to the prosecutor of Santafe de Bogota in Colombia calling on him to undertake "all necessary efforts" for Carlos Marulanda, former Colombian ambassador to the EU, to be transferred to Colombia and sanctioned for crimes committed against the peasant communities displaced from the "Hacienda Bellacruz" of which he is co-owner. Carlo Marulanda was arrested by the Spanish justice system in execution of an Interpol order lodged by Colombia in 1999, for the "training of terrorism and armed gangs", the authors recall in the letter. The signatories, mainly from the Green and GUE groups, call on the Colombian judicial system to prosecute all civil servants who have "participated in this serious breach of the Rule of Law", that is the massacre, torture or disappearance of peasants in conflict with the Marulanda family. You may recall that Marulanda resigned his post in Brussels in 1996, following pressure from NGOs and MEPs.
