Extraordinary meeting of Committee of Ministers to examine ways of stepping up fight against terrorism

Strasbourg, 13/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers has condemned in the most rigorous terms the terrorist attacks carried out with such an unprecedented level of violence against the American people and has expressed its solidarity with the US. In a statement, the Committee said that such monstrous acts called for resolute action from all states that set store by the values of civilisation. The Committee of Ministers decided to hold an extraordinary meeting on 21 September with the following items on the agenda: stepping up the fight against terrorism by using expert knowledge and the Council of Europe's instruments and by improving the means and mechanisms of co-operation with other international organisations and observer states; inviting its 43 Member States to make the existing pan-European cooperation even more effective by means of law-enforcement cooperation agreements; examining whether a convention on the suppression of terrorism should be set up; and including the fight against terrorism in the Council of Europe's integrated plan to fight violence on a day-to-day level in democratic societies.
