Commission contribution to project aimed at encouraging women's participation in elections

Brussels, 30/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has contributed 630, 514 euro to the funding of a project entitled "Women in Parliament", intended to promote participation of Jordanian women in the decision-making process, and especially, their presence in the country's parliament. The project, organised in view of the parliamentary elections of new November, is politically neutral and aims to support candidates from all political parties, says a Commission press release. The press release stipulates that the project, which comes within a broader EU effort to promote human rights and democratic principles in the Mediterranean region, intends developing within the student population awareness of the role of women in the democratic process and promote the status of women in Jordan so as to increase their chances of being elected. The project is being led by the British Council.
