30/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - The President of the Budgetary Control Committee in the European Parliament, Dietmut Theato (CDU), announced that her committee would examine, starting in September, the irregularities and the cases of presumed corruption found in Slovakia in the framework of the management of pre-accession Community funds (Phare). After the summer holidays, we should examin whether new Community funds for Slovakia should be freed as long as these irregularities have not been redressed, she wrote in a letter published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Mrs Theato also criticises the weight of the controls of pre-accession aids granted to the candidate countries and feels that in the case of Slovakia, crisis management failed. In the shadow of enlargement, only one European Prosecutor ("Finanztaatanwalt") could effectively watch over the EU's financial interests, felt Mrs Theato.
