Paris, 27/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) calls on the European Commission to renounce its approach consisting in wanting to have the law of the consumers' country apply in electronic commerce dispute cases. Appealing in favour of application of the law of the country of origin of the goods and services sold, the ICC insists that the current approach by the European Executive could smother transactions of the "business to consumer" kind (B2C) and discourage businesses, mainly SMEs, from seeking access to this market. The ICC gave its point of view to Antonio Vitorino, the European Commission responsible for justice and home affairs, in the context of consultation of the parties concerned by the highly controversial proposal relating to the law applying to cross-border Internet trade in Europe.
