Brussels, 24/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - This Wednesday, Commissioner Michaele Schreyer should have discussed with the other members of the College the various options possible to follow-up the rejection of the complaint (issued last week by a New York court) filed on behalf of the Community against two American cigarette manufacturers (see EUROPE of 19 July, p.7). EUROPE believes that the Commission chose not to retain the solution constituting of calling upon the American judge, in the very short time frame granted to it (ten days), to reconsider his decision. Either way, this option would have not been considered a the most promising for the future. The Commission continues its contacts with Member State correspondents responsible for the dossier, in order to choose between the appeals procedure and the "reformulation" of the complaint, (including the solution according to which only the Member States would pursue the case in the courts).
