Strasbourg, 06/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - In the resolution adopted during Thursday's emergency session, the European Parliament «strongly condemns the systematic and large-scale pillaging of natural resources and wealth from the Democratic Republic of Congo.». It invited the Kabila government to immediately embark on the process of reconciliation and democratisation, in order to allow the EU to fully restore its structural aid to Congo. It supported the Belgian presidency's initiative to give a priority status to the DRC on its agenda and invited the Council to encourage inter-Congolese dialogue so as to re-establish a state based on the rule of law. It also asks the Union to respond favourably to any request by the Congolese authorities with the aim of ensuring nuclear safety (extraction, exploitation, reprocessing) on the territory of the DRC.
